Why does a tankless water heater need repair?
Most repairs trace to a short list of causes that appear in the manufacturers' own troubleshooting guides. Scale restricts the heat exchanger and triggers overheating or scale codes. A dirty inlet water filter or air intake filter cuts flow or air. Vent blockages and gas supply problems stop ignition. Sensors can fail or get coated with scale.
The DOE says each tankless unit needs a minimum flow, 0.4 to 0.9 gallons per minute depending on the model, before it fires, so a thin trickle at a faucet can run cold. For water that turns cold, Navien's manual says to check that the cold water inlet filter is clean and that the hot faucet is open wide enough to draw at least 0.5 gallons per minute.
- Scale: Rinnai LC code, Navien E016 or E030, reduced flow, noise.
- Ignition: Rinnai 11 and Navien E003, often gas supply, igniter or flame sensing.
- Vent or air: Rinnai 10 and Navien E110, from a blocked vent, dirty air filter or condensate problem.
- Overheating: Rinnai 14 and 16, Navien E016 and E030, from restricted air flow or a clogged heat exchanger.
How does Sacramento's hard water affect tankless water heaters?
Hardness depends on your supplier. The USGS calls 0 to 60 mg/L soft, 61 to 120 moderately hard, 121 to 180 hard and over 180 very hard. Local 2025 reports show a wide range: soft Folsom Lake supplies, moderate river-and-well blends and some well systems with individual wells above 200 mg/L, which is the target limit in Rinnai's manual.
DOE's Building America guide says manufacturers recommend flushing anywhere from twice a year to once every three years, and some require a water softener when hardness exceeds 8 to 14 grains per gallon, or 136 to 239 mg/L. Because water from several wells is blended before it reaches your meter, the number that matters is your supplier's reported hardness, not the highest well.
| Supplier or system | Reported hardness (mg/L) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| El Dorado Irrigation District, Main System | 10-14 (average 13) | Treated surface water |
| City of Folsom | 23-33 (average 26.5) | Folsom Lake surface water |
| City of Sacramento | 83 system average; wells 15-154 | About 80% river water, 20% wells |
| Citrus Heights Water District | 100-170 wells (average 137.5) | Most supply is surface water |
| Roseville | 26 Folsom Lake; 31-280 wells (average 95) | Wells exceed 200 at the high end |
| Elk Grove Water District, Service Area 1 | 62-240 (average 141) | Local wells |
| Sacramento Suburban Water District, South | 51-280 wells (average 130) | Wells plus surface water |
| Golden State Water, Cordova | 25-270 (average 75) | Wells and treated surface water |
| City of Davis | 61-510 (weighted average 72) | River water plus wells |
How do you descale and flush a tankless water heater?
Follow your model's manual. All three major brands describe the same idea: shut off power and the hot and cold valves, connect a pump and hoses to service valves, circulate a descaling solution through the heat exchanger, rinse with clean water, clean the inlet filter and restore power.
Rinnai's manual calls for 4 gallons of undiluted white vinegar circulated for at least 1 hour at 4 gallons per minute. Navien calls for a diluted cleaning solution circulated for at least 45 minutes in a 5-gallon-or-larger bucket setup. If your unit has no service valves, a plumber can add them. HomeGuide puts professional tankless maintenance at $75 to $300 nationally.
How often does a tankless water heater need maintenance?
The range is wide, which is why the manual and your water report both matter. DOE's guide says twice a year to once every three years. Navien says to clean the air intake filter every 3 to 4 months and inspect the vent and air intake annually, and it has a service alarm, E760. Rinnai says its units should be inspected annually by a qualified service technician, and its SENSEI models have a service indicator you can set to 0.5, 1 or 2 years.
On the soft lake and river water that most of the Sacramento area gets, the long end of the range may be enough. On well water at the top of the local range, plan on the short end.
Does hard water scale void a tankless warranty?
It can limit it. Navien's limited warranty excludes damage from hard water deposits, lime or mineral build-up, and voids coverage for failure to perform regular maintenance. Rheem's tankless certificate excludes heat exchanger failures and malfunctions caused by lime, mineral build-up or scale. Rinnai says damage from lime build-up is not covered by its warranty.
Heat exchanger warranties are long, 12 to 15 years on current residential sheets from these brands, so keep proof of each flush. If a plumber recommends a softener or a water treatment device, ask which manufacturer requirement it addresses.
What does tankless water heater repair cost?
National guides put general water heater repairs at $150 to $750 (Fixr, 2025) and professional tankless maintenance at $75 to $300 (HomeGuide). No source gives Sacramento tankless repair prices. A scale flush with new service valves costs more than a flush of a unit that already has them, and a replaced heat exchanger or control board costs more again. Ask for a written estimate and whether the unit is still under warranty.
When should I call right away?
If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911, then PG&E. Do not use switches or phones inside. A blocked vent can push carbon monoxide into the home, so if a vent pipe is damaged or separated, Navien's manual says to turn off the unit and stop using it. Gas, vent and electrical repairs on a tankless unit are for a licensed plumber, and permitted work requires a license under CSLB rules. Call (916) 712-7030 to talk to a local water heater plumber.
