What do Navien error codes mean?
Navien's NPE-2 User's Manual lists the codes that appear on the front panel and the first things to check. For minor problems, the manual says resetting the unit with the Back button may clear the issue. If resetting and the listed steps do not help, it says to contact an authorized technician, a licensed professional or Navien Technical Support at 1-800-519-8794.
Codes can differ by series, so read the code against the manual for your model number. Navien posts manuals for each series on its downloads pages.
| Code | Reason | Action listed in the manual |
|---|---|---|
| E003 | Ignition failure | Make sure the main gas supply valve is open |
| E004 | False flame detection | Check that the electrical cord is properly grounded |
| E012 | Flame loss | Clean the intake air filter; make sure the electrical cord is properly grounded |
| E016 | Overheating of heat exchanger | Clean the cold water inlet filter; flush the heat exchanger |
| E030 | Exhaust overheating (flue temperature above 149°F, 65°C) | Clean the cold water inlet filter; flush the heat exchanger |
| E031 | Overheating of burner | Contact technical support |
| E109 | Fan motor abnormal operation | Clean the intake air filter |
| E110 | Abnormal air pressure | Make sure the exhaust pipe is free of obstructions; clean the intake air filter |
| E760 | Flushing or service alarm | Contact the installer for routine service |
| E773 | Using the wrong gas | Contact technical support |
Why do E016 and E030 point to descaling?
E016 and E030 are both overheating codes, and Navien's manual lists flushing the heat exchanger as an action for each. Mineral scale on the inside of the heat exchanger slows heat transfer, so the unit runs hotter. Hard water is where scale comes from, and the U.S. Department of Energy says scale restricts flow and can shorten a tankless unit's life.
The manual also tells owners to clean the cold water inlet filter and notes that a blocked air intake filter stops the water heater and shows code 110. It says the air intake filter should be cleaned every 3 to 4 months and that the vent termination and air intake should be inspected annually.
How do you descale a Navien tankless water heater?
Navien calls it flushing the heat exchanger and warns that it is a somewhat complicated procedure. If you are uncertain, it says to contact an authorized technician or licensed professional, and that improper maintenance can void the warranty. The manual's list of supplies is a bucket of 5 gallons or more, cleaning solution diluted with water, three hoses and a water circulation pump. The manual's diagram shows a Navien Easy Valve kit for the connections.
- Turn off the unit with the power button, disconnect power and close the hot and cold shutoff valves.
- Connect hoses so the pump circulates the cleaning solution from the bucket through the heat exchanger and back.
- Circulate the solution for at least 45 minutes.
- Rinse by running clean water through the unit for 5 minutes, then reconnect the lines.
- Remove and clean the cold water inlet filter, restore power and turn the unit back on.
How hard is the water in Sacramento, and does it matter for Navien?
It depends on your supplier. Folsom Lake and river supplies are soft: El Dorado Irrigation District reports an average of 13 mg/L, Folsom 26.5 and the City of Sacramento's system averages 83. Well-fed systems run harder. Sacramento Suburban Water District reports wells from 51 to 280 mg/L in its South Service Area, and Elk Grove Water District reports 62 to 240.
Navien's warranty excludes any damage caused by local adverse conditions including hard water deposits, lime or mineral build-up, and it lists failure to perform regular maintenance as a reason to void coverage. That makes descaling a warranty issue as well as a repair issue. See the Sacramento hardness table on this site's tankless water heater page for 19 local systems.
What does the Navien warranty cover?
In the NPE-2 User's Manual, the NPE Series residential water heater with standard or controlled recirculation has a 1-year labor warranty, a 5-year parts warranty and a 15-year heat exchanger warranty. With uncontrolled recirculation, it is 1 year of labor, 3 years of parts and 5 years on the heat exchanger. Warranty periods start on the original installation date.
To get warranty service, Navien says to contact the original installer. The warranty is void for improper installation, installation by a non-licensed installer, units bought through the internet or other channels from a supplier not authorized by Navien, and failure to perform regular maintenance. Labor payment needs Navien's prior written approval and follows its approved labor allowances. Terms vary by model and date, so check the warranty that came with your unit.
How much does Navien tankless repair cost?
No source gives Navien-specific prices. HomeGuide puts professional tankless maintenance at $75 to $300 nationally, and general water heater repairs run $150 to $750 (Fixr, 2025). A flush with a service valve kit is a maintenance cost. A replacement heat exchanger or control board is a larger repair, so ask for a written estimate and whether your Navien is still under warranty.
How do I check the license of a plumber who works on Navien units?
Ask for the contractor license number and look it up on the CSLB website. Water heater work that needs a permit requires a licensed contractor, and the plumbing classification is C-36. Calls are answered by independent local plumbers who work on Navien units and does not do the repair itself. Call (916) 712-7030 to talk to a local water heater plumber.
